Regional producers ready to fight back

Former Super Channel exec Nick Wry is rallying disgruntled regional producers behind a new national producers association.

Wry has launched SHERPA -- the Small Regional Producers Association -- to ensure that small producers get their voice heard at the national level.

"National organizations aren't looking after their smaller regional members and they are starting to revolt," says Wry, who has been based in Edmonton since 1974 and has been independent producing since leaving Super Channel.

Wry's beef is that Canada-wide associations like the CFTPA are forced to cater to Toronto producers because they dominate the membership in terms of sheer numbers. SHERPA will allow the voice and concerns of smaller prodcos to be heard.

"We are here to fight for small regional producers," says Wry, who is CEO of the new association. "We need an organization to represent producers outside of the 514 and 416 area code."
SHERPA will be overseen by an advisory board made up of small producers from every province. It will serve only as a lobbying organization and doesn't preclude producers from joining other national and regional associations.

"We will take positions forward to the government, the CRTC and appropriate parties on industry issues," explains Wry.

Membership in SHERPA is limited to film, TV and new media companies with up to five full-time or contract employees, and with a head office more than 150 kilometers from Toronto or Montreal.

"This is the original description of a region defined by Telefilm many years ago," explains Wry, stressing that small companies in Vancouver are eligible to join.

Wry says that the CFTPA's submission to the Canada Media Fund consultations triggered him to launch the new association.

The CFTPA filing states that the current Canadian Television Fund system provides a significant incentive for broadcasters to support projects in the regions and there is no need to make any changes in the new fund to address regional production.

"That was the last straw," says Wry. "Toronto producers don't think companies outside Toronto should be given a leg up. There are more CFTPA members in Toronto than the rest of the country, so the national association's position is we don't need a regional bonus.

Edmonton-based SHERPA's first order of business will be to lobby for the inclusion of regional production incentives in the CMF.

"We are looking for additional money from the fund for regional production and additional credit to broadcasters working in the regions," says Wry.

An additional incentive is necessary because regional producers don't have the same access to broadcasters, he explains.

"If you live in Toronto or Montreal you can go down the street to a broadcaster and if they tell you to come back next week, you say sure," he explains. "When you live in Edmonton, flying to Toronto every two weeks ends up costing you a fortune, so you don't have the same advantage. And broadcasters don't come to the regions of their own volition to talk to producers."

Wry is attending the cross-country CMF consultations and hosting SHERPA info sessions after each meeting. The cost of membership is $149 or discounted to $99 for producers who belong to a provincial association.

Sedikitnya 51 orang tewas dan lebih dari 250 ribu orang mengungsi setelah badai tropis Ketsana memicu hujan terhebat di Manila lebihdari empat dekade. Demikian dilansir AFP, Minggu (27/9/2009).

Manila dan daerah di sekitarnya diguyur hujan lebat lebih dari 9 jam pada Sabtu (26/9). Air lalu membanjiri 80 persen wilayah ibukota dan lebih 12 juta warga.

Air bah itu meninggi hingga 20 kaki (lebih 6 meter), memaksa sejumlah keluarga mengungsi ke atap rumah dan pemerintah pun menetapkan 'keadaan bencana'.

Jalanan besar berubah menjadi sungai yangn menyapu mobil-mobil dan rumah-rumah. Video yang diambil dari helikopter militer menunjukkan para warga terlihat menderita di atap-atap rumah mereka, mengharap makanan dan bantuan.

Menteri Pertahanan Gilberto Teodoro yang memimpin upaya penyelamatan menyatakan, 51 orang saat ini dinyatakan tewas dan sedikitnya 21 orang hilang.

Lebih dari 4.000 orang diselamatkan menggunakan helikopter atau perahu karet. Namun banyak di antara mereka yang masih terjebak banjir.

Teodoro menyatakan, badai itu memaksa 280 ribu orang di Manila dan 5 provinsi terpencil lainnya mengungsi. Mereka tesebar di 92 pusat evakuasi.

Ketika hujan untuk sementara berhenti, Teodoro menyatakan banjir mungkin akan menyerang provinsi di bagian utara karena saluran air dan dam tak mampu menampung arus air.

Listrik dan saluran komunikasi mati di banyak daerah akibat musibah ini. Beberapa orang di antaranya berhasil berkomunikasi dengan stasiun radio publik dan menceritakan kondisi mereka yang memprihatinkan.

"Tolong datang dan bantu kami. Kami terjebak sejak siang," pinta Cristine Reyes, warga distrik Marikina, pada Sabtu malam. Dia terjebak bersama dua keponakan dan ibunya di lantai dua rumahnya. "Air terus naik dan kami akan terendam," katanya pilu.

Ketua Palang Merah setempat Gwendolyn Pang menyatakan, petugas penyelamat bekerja keras mencapai sejumlah wilayah, sementara banyak jalanan yang tidak bisa ditembus.

"Ini tak pernah terjadi sebelumnya. Nyaris 80 persen kota metropolitan Manila terendam," ujar Pang.

Dinas BMKG setempat menyatakan, hujan 9 jam pada Sabtu kemarin lebih tinggi dari curah hujan rata-rata bulanan. Curah hujan 9 jam itu mencapai 410,6 milimeter, melebihi rekor curah hujan satu hari pada Juli 1967 sebanyak 334 milimeter.

Banjir tersebut mengalir sangat deras sehingga orang yang mengungsi harus berjalan memegangi tali yang diikatkan petugas ke tempat yang kuat seperti yang terlihat di foto.

CANADA INTERACTIVE FUND

The federal government says it will inject $37.5 million over the next five years into a new fund to boost the creation of "interactive cultural content" such as applications for web and mobile platforms -- though Ottawa seems unclear where the money is coming from, and who will hand it out.

Heritage Minister James Moore unveiled the Canada Interactive Fund on Wednesday at Toronto's Seneca College. CIF is open to candidates from aboriginal and ethnocultural communities, as well as official-language minority communities and other not-for-profit cultural organizations.

The new fund is expected to "build technical capacity" and enhance Internet and new technologies within the organizations that receive funding, according to a statement from Heritage.

"With such a diverse student population, Seneca well understands the value of nurturing cultural identities," commented Seneca's associate VP of academic Henry Decock, adding that students graduating from digital media arts and animation programs are "poised to contribute to projects that cultural institutions will undertake with this funding."

It is not clear, however, if the CIF will replace Heritage's Partnerships and Gateway funds, which also back new media efforts by minority communities and non-profits. Heritage says both funds will continue to "operate through 2009/10" but gives no indication as to their fate after that period. Meanwhile, the CIF will be in place for 2010/11.

There is also no word on who will be administering the fund. Heritage did not respond to questions by press time.

Berbagai kelompok dari Amerika, Kanada dan Eropa, para pengikut sekte apokaliptis (kiamat) dan beberapa individu mengatakan bahwa hari tersebut adalah hari terakhir dunia ini.



Mereka yang percaya bahwa kiamat akan terjadi pada 21 Desember 2012, mendasarkan kepercayaan mereka pada kalender yang dibuat oleh suku Maya, yang ditemukan di reruntuhan di Mexico. Kebudayaan kuno ini dikenal atas kemampuannya di ilmu matematika dan astronomi.



Masyarakat Maya Kuno, yang dikenal maju ilmu matematika dan astronominya, mengikuti “perhitungan panjang” kalender yang mencapai 5,126 tahun. Ketika peta astronomi mereka dipindahkan ke kalender Gregorian, yang digunakan secara standar sekarang, waktu perhitungan bangsa Maya berhenti pada 21 Desember 2012.



Mereka yang percaya juga mengatakan adanya hubungan lain selain antara kalender maya dan kehancuran yang akan datang. Matahari akan terhubung lurus dengan pusat Tata Surya pertama kalinya semenjak 26000 tahun yang lalu, yang menandai puncak musim dingin. Beberapa orang mengatakan hal ini akan mempengaruhi aliran energi ke bumi, atau karena adanya sunspot dan sunflare yang jumlahnya membengkak, menyebabkan adanya efek terhadap medan magnet bumi



Para ahli berusaha meredam skenario kiamat ini sebagai salah satu ramalan bohongan lagi, tapi sangat jelasm bahwa banyak sekali orang yang meramalkan adanya kemungkinan bencana besar pada tanggal tersebut.

Geryl bukanlah satu2nya orang yang berpikir demikian, jika anda goggling “2012 the end of the world” akan ada sekitar 700.000 hit untuk anda klik. Lebih dari 6500 video telah diposting di YouTube. Ribuan buku jg menulis mengenai hal itu, mengikuti sukses buku Daniel Pinchbeck: “2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl,” yang terjual ribuan kopi tiap bulannya semenjak dirilis bulan Mei lalu.



Tapi apa sih bencana besar di tanggal 21 Desember 2012 itu? ada yang mengatakan pembalikan titik magnet bumi, utara menjadi selatan, kemudian matahari terbit dari barat, yang memicu bencana alam diseluruh dunia. Ada juga yang mengatakan bahwa tanggal tersebut adalah tanggal kebangkitan spiritual seluruh dunia.



Para ahli menertawakan hal ini. “Ramalan2 itu benar2 nggak ada dasarnya sama sekali, apalagi di kebudayaan Maya yang kita kenal,” kata Stephen Houston, profesor antropologi di Brown University, yang adalah juga ahli tulisan hieroglif Maya. “Penggambaran bangsa maya tidak pernah menyebut2 hal ini.” katanya. Bangsa maya melihat bahwa tanggal tersebut adalah tanggal kalender mereka, tapi kemudian mengulang kalender mereka kembali tanpa adanya bencana sama sekali.



“Emang seperti itu, hal itu cuman ungkapan kegelisahan manusia di jaman kita, dan menemukan adanya preseden kuno mengenai hal itu, mereka langsung menghubung2kannya.” katanya. “Orang lebih cenderung percaya dengan kebijaksanaan kuno yang meramalkan kejadian di masa ini.”

Preparation Method of Pumpkin Roll

Put flour, baking powder, spices and salt in another bowl. Mix it appropriately and add to egg mixture and mix it properly. Take a greased and waxed-paper lined 10-by-15-inch jelly-roll pan, Spread the mixture into it. Preheat the oven at 350 ° and Bake it for 15 minutes. Remove it from oven and cool it for 15 minutes. Take a clean tea towel and Place cake sprinkled liberally with powdered sugar on it. Cool it for 10 minutes longer. Roll the cake up in towel and set it aside.

Prepare filling, while cake is cooling in towel. Take cream cheese and butter in a bowl and beat it, add powdered sugar and vanilla and blend until it become smooth. After cooling unroll the cake and evenly spread filling over the cake. Without the towel Roll up the cake and wrap in a plastic wrap. Cover it and chill for 1 hour at least. Make slice of it before serving. Refrigerate extra slices. This pumpkin roll freezes well.

• 9 ounces penne pasta
• 2 tablespoons butter
• 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
• 3 tablespoons crumbled Gorgonzola cheese

• 1 large pear, peeled and cubed
• 1/2 cup chopped toasted walnuts
• ground black pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS

1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a rolling boil. Cook the penne in the boiling water, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, about 11 minutes; drain.
2. Return the drained pasta to the pot; stir the butter, Parmesan cheese, and Gorgonzola cheese into the pasta and place over medium heat; cook until the cheese is completely melted. Pour the cream into the pasta mixture; stir. Remove from heat and fold the pear into the pasta mixture. Top with walnuts. Season with pepper to serve.

3. Tuangkan susu cokelat yang sudah dimasak ke dalam adonan telur sambil terus diaduk.


4. Masak kembali adonan dengan cara ditim sambil terus diaduk dengan spatula kayu hingga adonan mengental (menempel tipis di spatula kayu). Namum jangan dimasak terlalu lama agar telur tidak menggumpal. Angkat dan biarkan dingin.


5. Setelah dingin, masukkan pasta es krim cokelat dan aduk hingga rata.


6. Masukkan ke dalam kulkas selama minimum 4 jam atau sampai adonan cukup dingin.


7. Keluarkan adonan dari kulkas, tuangkan ke dalam mesin es krim. Proses hingga mengental dan putaran terlihat berat.


8. Tuangkan ke dalam wadah bersih, taburi dengan cokelat chip. Masukkan ke dalam freezer hingga mengeras dan siap dihidangkan.
